Jeronimo Cid – Placement Lecturing at Bangor University

My Envision placement involved lecturing and other teaching activities at Bangor University. I had always known I liked being involved in education and Envision and Bangor were great in helping this placement happen.
As part of my placement, I helped in 13 modules over the course of three months, had a total of 200 hours of lecturing, lab, field and computer room demonstrations, marking, and mentoring. I also had the opportunity to join the PGCert programme and learn many aspects on how to teach effectively. The main aspects that made it rewarding were the huge diversity of topics and meeting so many students, over 4000 across all my contact hours! I also felt many concepts click with my understanding much better after having to explain them, notably in statistics and genetics. It also helped me improve my time management during especially intense time periods.

This placement helped me realise I wish to pursue a mixed research and teaching career. I think Envision placements are a great opportunity to gain experience and perspective of your future while parking the PhD for a while, and I recommend taking one to every Envision student!
