Research Experience Placements

Summary

The NERC Envision DTP Research Experience Placement (REP) scheme encourages undergraduates undertaking quantitative subjects outside of NERC remit to consider careers in environmental science. During a REP, an undergraduate joins the hosting organisation for between 8 and 10 weeks to complete a short-term research project within the environmental sciences. We offer up to three summer placements per year. Projects are open to undergraduate students from across the UK.

Funding

Each REP should be for a minimum of eight weeks (and a maximum of ten weeks) over the summer vacation period. Funding of up to £2,500 is available per REP to cover the minimum stipend of £200 per week and a contribution towards research and training expenses of up to £500. Additional funding beyond this amount must be found from other sources, including the department.

Student Eligibility

Students are subject to eligibility criteria to be able to apply for NERC REPs. Selected students must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible for a REP. The students must:

  • Be studying for an undergraduate degree in a quantitative discipline outside of NERC’s scientific remit (e.g. mathematics, statistics, computing, engineering, physics).
  • Be applying for a placement in a different department to their undergraduate degree.
  • Be undertaking their first undergraduate degree studies (or integrated Masters).
  • Be expected to obtain a first or upper second class UK honours degree.
  • Be eligible for subsequent NERC PhD funding (i.e. UK, EU or right to remain in the UK).
Responsibilities of Supervisors
  • Ensure that the REP student is fully supervised throughout the project.
  • Ensure that adequate space and equipment is available for the REP student to complete the project.
  • Provide appropriate training necessary.
  • Ensure that all costs are used and accounted for appropriately.
  • Ensure that details and assessment of the project are reported to Envision.
Responsibilities of Students
  • Commit to the complete term of the project (8-10 weeks).
  • Engage fully with the research project and maintain contact with supervisor.
  • Input into the final REP report to be submitted to Envision DTP.
